A useful recommendation should leave room for the article

September 2026 retrospective · Based on work from 2026-09-30. Publication date shown above.

A technical article earns its space by helping somebody understand or do something. A product recommendation can belong in that experience when it supports the task and the reader can tell why it is there.

September's ProgreTech work added and corrected local sponsor banners in Manabi Kōbō and CodeSeal. The changes included choosing from available banner images instead of pointing at missing ones. It's a modest implementation detail with a visible consequence: a broken promotion still consumes attention, often at the exact moment someone is trying to read.

Here in the Journal, you'll see relevant StackSocial recommendations and occasional links to our own projects. The article should help you get something done whether you buy anything or just use the idea.

Label an affiliate recommendation where readers encounter it. A short explanation that a purchase may support the publication is easier to understand than a vague icon or a disclosure hidden several pages away.

For search engines, Google's guidance provides a sponsored relationship value for paid links. A typical link can carry both the commercial relationship and the appropriate new-tab behavior:

<a href="REVIEWED_AFFILIATE_URL"
   rel="sponsored nofollow noopener"
   target="_blank">View the product details</a>

The placeholder is intentional. Use your verified affiliate destination and inspect the final landing page before publishing. The attribute doesn't replace the visible disclosure, and a visible disclosure doesn't make an inaccurate product claim acceptable.

Keep the recommendation connected to the task

A Python teaching article might reasonably discuss a relevant course if the curriculum and prerequisites fit the reader. A local AI hardware article needs more care: a random software bundle doesn't help someone understand GPU memory or driver compatibility.

Write the practical reason first. Which step becomes easier? What does the product include? What limitation should a buyer check? If you cannot answer those questions from a current listing and reliable information, omit the recommendation.

Avoid turning a discounted price into a permanent article claim. Prices, availability, license terms, and redemption conditions can change. A durable article can explain the selection criteria and link to the current offer without promising that today's deal will exist next month.

Local artwork makes the page easier to control

Serving a reviewed local banner gives the publisher control over its size, alt text, and loading behavior. It also makes a missing asset straightforward to diagnose. You can validate that the file exists before the page is released.

The September banner corrections are a reminder to build rotation from the assets actually available. A list of imagined filenames is an easy way to ship broken images. If the eligible set is empty, the page should still read cleanly.

Use a bounded placement with reserved space so it doesn't push text around as images load. The banner should work at phone widths and remain understandable when images are unavailable. Keep the call to action a real link with a meaningful label.

Review the offline experience too

A saved article can preserve the explanation and its disclosure while a purchase link naturally requires a connection. Make that boundary clear. An offline reader shouldn't be trapped behind a failed ad request or a loading spinner.

Test the page with the network disabled, with a missing promotional image, and with a keyboard. The content should remain readable in each case. If a banner is omitted from an exported PDF, keep any relevant affiliate disclosure alongside product references that remain in the text.

A simple editorial decision

Before adding a commercial link, ask whether you would still mention the item if there were no commission. Then verify the current listing and explain the relationship honestly.

Keep the label clear, check the current offer, and leave the reader room to read. A well-placed recommendation can help with the task. If it takes several sentences to explain why the product belongs there, save that space for the article.
